A nice supplemental income could be right around the corner

Are you a registered nurse with expert IV starting skills looking for more variety in your career or to earn more money? Then becoming a mobile IV therapy nurse could be the perfect fit. In this blog we’re going over the steps you’ll need to take to make it happen.

Step 1: Obtain an LLC

First, you’ll need to get a Limited Liability Company (LLC). But what is it? Essentially you’re creating a private company. Wikipedia defines it as: “A limited liability company is the United Statesspecific form of a private limited company. It is a business structure that can combine the pass-through taxation of a partnership or sole proprietorship with the limited liability of a corporation.”

So why do you need one to be a mobile IV therapy nurse? According to LegalZoom is does the following:

  1. Provides you with your own legal identity which is important because you’re protected from anybody suing you. It also gives you a bank account that’s separate from your own personal bank account.
  2. It protects your personal assets such as your home and bank account and it protects you from personal liability
  3. It gives you structure to operate your business such as how you divide the income that you earn from your LLC
  4. Gives you tax options

Now how do you do it?

When you’re getting an LLC you need to choose a name for it and in your case that’s going to be your name followed by RN LLC.
Choose a registered agent—this is someone who can receive legal documents like a subpoena. You can pick yourself or anyone over the age of 18. Also, you can get a registered agent but that will require paying a fee.

File what’s called an “articles of organization” (some states have a different name for it like “certificate of information”).
Create an operating agreement that maps out all the legal, financial and management rights and basically all the pertinent information about how you’ll operate your business.
Once you’ve completed these steps you’re good to go, but you’ll need to make sure you keep your LLC active.

Step 2: Set up a business bank account

Now that you have your LLC you can use it to set up your business bank account. Setting up a bank account is fairly straightforward, but the process varies from bank to bank.

Here’s what Bank of America requires (You may need some or all of the following):

  • The address and phone number of your company
  • The name(s) of the people who will be listed as account owners
  • Personal identification such as your driver’s license
  • Documentation that proves the existence of the business. Documents that qualify include:
    1. A federal tax ID number for the business, also known as an employer identification number
    2. Your Social Security number if you are a sole proprietor
    3. State or local authority documents that show you’ve formed a legal entity, such as a limited liability company (LLC)
  • The bank’s minimum deposit amount. Unfunded accounts may be forced to close or encounter overdraft fees

Step 3: Set up malpractice insurance

Being a nurse has its share of stressors and not the least of them is the fear of making a mistake and causing harm to any of your patients. And unfortunately, mistakes do happen mainly when nurses are overwhelmed.

The good news is that as a mobile IV therapy nurse you get to control the pace and deliver treatments in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Still, you don’t want to leave anything to chance so you’ll need to purchase medical malpractice insurance.

There are plenty of companies who sell the insurance to choose from, but it may take a few phone calls and online searches before you find the right fit. Need more information? Read this article from World.

Step 4: Have a reliable vehicle with full-coverage insurance

You will be driving most of the time to take care of your patients as a mobile IV therapy nurse. And you’ll want to make sure that you get to each appointment on time and ready to go. So having a reliable, insured vehicle is necessary.
